In the current issue of We Jazz magazine
In the current issue of We Jazz magazine, Peter Margasak reviews three of my recent releases.
About the double CD GRIENER/RODER: BE OUR GUEST, with which Jan and I celebrate our thirty years of collaboration, he writes: :
“Many seasoned jazz fans, especially those following the European scene, have surely come across the names of drummer Michael Griener and bassist Jan Roder, two of Germany’s finest musicians. They’re both fixtures on the Berlin scene, working in countless ensembles and performing on dozens of recordings. Generally, they are not bandleaders, but that hardly diminishes their importance, creativity, or improvisational savvy. They possess those three things in abundance, which is a key reason they’ve been in such demand for years. The dazzling new double CD Be Our Guest vividly demonstrates how they’ve become a prolific rhythm section trusted for its internal rapport as well as its nonchalant versatility. This collection functions as a corrective, informing even devoted fans just how much they’ve played together since they first met in the early 1990s. …..The cast of collaborators – including pianists like Ulrich Gumpert, Uwe Oberg, and Aki Takase, and reedists such as Silke Eberhard, Ken Vandermark, and Matthias Schubert – is impressive, but what ends up distinguishing the collection is the rhythm section’s stylistic elasticity, impressively morphing, adapting, and stretching according to the requirements of any given context, whether post-bop, free jazz, or spoken word conceptualism.”
About Oùat’s TRIAL OF FUTURE ANIMALS : „Hearing these three musicians pull ideas from thin air, circling around them, before being pulled in another unexpected direction represents spontaneous music-making of the highest level.”
The entire issue of WeJazz is well worth reading, and if you haven’t already, you should definitely order a copy.
And while you’re at it, you should also pick up the Summer 24 issue, in which Bill Meyer has written a wonderful article interviewing Jan Roder and me about our time in Berlin during the wild nineties.
