The Simon Rummel Ensemble

The Simon Rummel Ensemble is one of the ensembles I am particularly fond of and have been a part of since its inception 12 years ago.
I hardly know of any other group in which such a variety of instruments and musical styles play together so beautifully and with such ease, with recorder, Casio keyboard, (unamplified!) violin, tuba, drums, electronics, bass clarinet and so on.
So far we have released three CDs on Umlaut Records, and in November we rehearsed and recorded new pieces in a small church in Cologne-Dünnwald.
Simon’s music has an unusual charm and corresponds to his various activities as a composer, choir director, church organist, jazz pianist and visual artist (who is also responsible for the graphic design of some of my releases, such as Wald, Straight Horn & Griener/Roder: Be Our Guest).
So here’s the first of a couple of videos of the concert on November 30th that concluded our rehearsal/recording session in the days before; in a tiny theater in Essen, the Rabbit Hole Theater.
It’s called Vienna Library and I hope you like it.
