Yesterday I had the opportunity..

Yesterday I had the opportunity to play a solo concert – something I don’t do very often. I never seem to be able to prepare for such occasions and just follow the sounds wherever they take me. I was told to play a solo of up to 20 minutes, and I pretty much hit the mark, even without looking at the clock. It was only when I got home that I found out Roy Haynes had gone. I’d been thinking about him a lot all week after playing with Oùat on the same stage where I’d seen him play for the only time at Quasimodo years before. I owe him a lot, almost too much. Thanks for everything, Mr. Haynes.
